There is a very simple drill that will help all teachers and coaches create a strong and defensive Rugby team. Strong defence is vital for any successful and competitive team and the drill addresses this by focusing on a proper tackle technique and quick recovery. It is essential to ensure correct tackling techniques, which are to keep your eyes on the target, bend down, aim your head to the side of the attackers body, drive your shoulder in around or just below the chest and wrap your arms around them.
To set up the drill, use 6 attackers and 2 defenders. The attackers split into 3 groups of 2 with the defending pair positioned in the middle. The middle attacking pair (scrum-half and stand-off) feed the ball to the centres on the left who are met by the defending pair.
Once the first attacking pair have been tackled, the defending pair will get back to their feet quickly and move across to defend the second attacking group.
